Neglectful maternal parenting of Michael Bacolas and his siblings
Julia Bacolas was a detached mother and showed little interest in maternal interactions with her children. At all opportunities, she skirted her responsibilities for the caregiving of her offspring. Her argument for apathetic interest in her children's development was that Michael Roberson was "better with the children" and "the children listen to him."
Between 1994 and 1998, Julie Bacolas suffered from an extreme addiction to crystal meth amphetamines. She refused treatment for her addiction, resorted to prostitution to pay for her drugs, and was emotionally absent from thee family.
This apathetic parenting was later attributed to a great lack of empathy to the needs of her kids. Children need an involved, positive, and emotionally attached mother. Otherwise, research shows that their children will suffer negative developmental outcomes.

Due to severe cognitive, developmental, and language delays with Michael Bacolas and his siblings, Michael Robertson changed his course of studies to developmental psychology and instituted a rigorous intervention program utilizing the most current research on correcting cognitive deficiencies in children.
Michael Robertson completed his undergraduate research project, which later became the outline for his Master's Thesis, "Accelerating Children's Cognitive Development" and applied those theories to the developmental and cognitive delays with Michael Bacolas and his siblings. 1998 kidnapping and sexual assault of Michael Bacolas younger sister
In 1998, Julia Bacolas kidnapped Michael Bacolas and his siblings from their father's care. Previously, she had deserted the family three times, lasting from a few days to a week. The kidnapping was reputational as the mother did not want to be disparaged by her husband again for maternal abandonment. The father believed at the time the kidnapping was for show, as his wife knew he would fight for his children (which she didn't want to parent).
During this time of separation from the father and his children, the youngest sibling was sexually molested by Julie Bacolas' boyfriend, Ed Stoffers (Edward Troy Stoffers, Edward Stoffers).

Each stage in Erikson's theory builds on the preceding stages and paves the way for following periods of development. In each stage, Erikson believed people experience a conflict (crisis) that serves as a turning point in development.

Michael Bacolas unresolved crisis: Initiative vs. Guilt
The third stage of psychosocial development takes place during the preschool years. At this point in psychosocial development, children begin to assert their power and control over the world through directing play and other social interactions.
Children who are successful at this stage feel capable and able to lead others. Those who fail to acquire these skills are left with a sense of guilt, self-doubt, and lack of initiative. If the child is put in an environment where initiation is repressed through criticism and control, he/she will develop a sense of guilt. The trust and autonomy of previous stages develop into a desire to take initiative or to think of ideas and initiative action.
Michael Bacolas Jr. failed to resolve the psychosocial crises of his earlier stages, of no fault of his own. The child lacked the necessary developmental and cognitive skills necessary to navigate successfully through the Initiative vs. Guilt crisis.
Michael grew up in an environment that hamstrung his early childhood development, based in part on his documented cognitive retardation and severe language delays. This lead to a lifetime of guilt and shame and low self esteem issues that impacted subsequent psychosocial stages.
As a result, the child lacked the abilities to show initiative in academia, peer relationships, and responsibilities to his family as the oldest son.

The absence of initiative during this critical stage of development was also reflected in his academics at school and his participation in the services offered for the gifted and talented. Michael Robertson worked intensely to remedy the cognitive deficits with his developmentally challenged offspring, and the father was so successful with his interventions that three of his offspring advanced from cognitive retardation to intellectual giftedness.
As a result of test scores showing Michael Bacolas advanced to the 99th percentile in qualitative and quantitative reasoning, as reflected on the Cognitive Abilities Test and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (administered by the Washington School District in Phoenix, Arizona) Michael and his siblings were admitted to "Project Potential" for the gifted and talented (1991 - 1996 test results from Special Needs Programs at Manzanita Elementary School and the Washington School District will be produced upon request). The children received special needs services for developmental delays, while simultaneously receiving services for the gifted and talented.
Michael Bacolas lacked any meaningful initiative to justify remaining in the program for the gifted and talented. Aside from his anemic grades in elementary school, the child barely remained enrolled in the program, as he maintained a consistent "D" average in his gifted classes. Conversely, his other two siblings excelled academically and maintained a consistent "A" average in the Project potential program. The school district allowed Michael to stay in the gifted program based on his IQ test scores, his progress from cognitive retardation to intellectual giftedness, and the intense lobbying by Michael Robertson to allow his son to continue in the program based on his developmental disability. The school district agreed to allow Michael to continue participating in the gifted program and concurred that failing the student from the program would have deleterious consequences to his self esteem.
Michael Bacolas had no friends in elementary school, outside the friends of his younger brother he associated with. The child lacked the initiative to form peer relationships in early childhood, which also effected his ability to form lasting contacts with other adolescents in his teen age years. It is believed the child's inability to identify with others in his age group was a contributing factor in the expression of pedophilia later in his childhood, adolescence, and on into adulthood.
After the divorce in 1998, Michael Robertson was forced to rely on his oldest son to help with the functioning of the family unit in a single parent household, just as a matter of birth order. Michael Bacolas was given that responsibility as the oldest child to monitor his siblings while the father worked and attended graduate school.
Michael Bacolas Jr. lacked any initiative to help with his family after his mother abandoned him and his family in 1998. The father had difficulties maintaining employment as Michael was mentally absent to monitor his siblings or enforce parenting standards or curfews.
Children are expected to rebel and misbehave, especially in light of the maternal abandonment and trauma associated with the sexual assault of his youngest sister by his mother's boyfriend. However, the lack of empathy by Michael Bacolas to the needs of the family caused extreme hardships that had a negative impact on all members of the family.
Michael Bacolas' lack of initiative to "stand up to the plate" and take responsibilities as the oldest child had disastrous outcomes for the family, the father's career, and his graduate school studies (and this lack of initiative had a negative impact on the quality of life and support the father was responsible to provide for all his children).
Between 1998 and 2002, the older boys were chronic shoplifters and burglars, causing countless interactions with law enforcement and security at retail establishments...too many to count. Michael supervised his younger brother burning down a neighbors home, throwing cats off houses, fighting with children and their parents, leaving his sisters unattended and in the care of neighbors, not preparing meals or helping with chores (until the father returned from work or graduate school late at night), and violating curfew at all times in his father's absence.
In 2002, Michael Robertson was forced to withdraw from graduate school as a result of his son's failure to show initiative and properly monitor his younger brother, who severely vandalized a vacant home during the day, causing the family to be evicted from their home of six years and removing the neighborhood support network (who monitored the younger sisters while the father worked and attended graduate school, while the older brothers ran rampant).
According to Erik Erikson (1950), "If the child is put in an environment where initiation is repressed through criticism and control, he/she will develop a sense of guilt."
The father was highly critical of his son's performance at school and with his family.
Michael Robertson employed authoritative parenting styles with is children prior to and after his divorce in 1998. Due to extreme deviant behaviors exhibited by his sons and the father's inability to enforce Adlearian-Dreikurian parenting, the father (out of necessity) was forced to employ authoritarian parenting styles and run the family like a group home and in accord to authoritarianism techniques employed by Michael Roberson's own father, a former Chief of Police.

Angry as a parent over the fact that his career goals and graduate studies were hijacked by his eldest son's lack of initiative to work for the betterment of a single parent family, Michael Robertson disparaged his oldest son regularly. Michael Robertson held his oldest son to an extremely high standard, due to his son's intellectual giftedness. Although that was a deficit in his parenting, authoritarian parenting gained a level of compliance by Michael Jr. and his brother, allowing the father to actually be able to work and support the family. Michael Bacolas' behavioral health issues were too acute to allow his father to return to graduate school during his son's childhood, but the father did ultimately return to his original career and academic pursuits with his admission to law school in 2020.
Due to all these factors listed, Michael Bacolas did not successfully navigate through the psychosocial crisis of Initiative vs. Guilt, which impacted his ability to address developmental milestones in subsequent Eriksonian stages.

Michael Bacolas inherited severe cognitive retardation from his mother, Julia Bacolas, as well as narcissistic personality traits. These cognitive deficits played a major role in the child's inability to successfully resolve the psychosocial crises of Trust vs. Mistrust, Autonomy vs. Shame & Doubt, and Initiative vs. Guilt. Exacerbating his arrested psychosocial development was the emotional detachment and lack of empathy from his maternal caregiving, his mother's neglect of her son and his siblings, and the trauma she exposed him to leading up to the parent's divorce.
Michael Robertson noticed at this point in his son's childhood development that he was showing symptoms of mania. Coming from the behavioral health industry, the father was very resistant to put his son on psychotropic medication (a failure of the father's parenting). The father followed the school of thought that children were overmedicated in society and that alternative interventions should be employed in behavioral modification. This is one of the greatest failures of Michael Robertson's parenting of his older children.
Michael Jr. was placed on a restrictive diet of no caffeine, no soda, limited sugar intake with no candy, and concentrations of fruits and vegetables. Since the child never identified with his father, obviously he rebelled against this dietary program. To deepen the arrested development that was intensified through consistent mania, Michael Bacolas consumed over the counter stimulants, ginseng, and energy drinks...prohibited by his father, but done anyway out of spite and disrespect to his father's instruction and his own mental health needs.
The father was in denial the children needed psychiatric treatment, when in fact all the children required psychiatric interventions and medication management. Michael Robertson's failure to address these mental health concerns of his offspring created issues, not only for Michael Jr., but for the rest of the children, causing untreated developmental handicaps and the expression of severe mental illness with these children as adults.
During this period of late childhood, Michael Bacolas Jr. began a preoccupation with children much younger than his age group. It was believed he would "grow out of it" as 12 year old boys having sexual imagery and "friendships" with girls as young as eight years old would subside. It never subsided and the arrested development began a life long illness of pedophilia with Michael Bacolas that continues to this day.
Michael Bacolas unresolved crisis: Identity vs. Identity Confusion
Michael Jr. was covertly a pedophile the rest of his childhood and into his adolescence. He hid that disorder very well in order to avoid shame and condemnation from his younger brother and father.
When his son was 18 years old, Michael Robertson and his son Christopher witnessed pedophilic behaviors toward an elementary age school girl, while at a family dinner at his employer's home (a Christian man who employed Michael Bacolas out of his home). Christopher brought attention to the "broom stick' incident and the father had a "talk" with is son about inappropriate behaviors toward children. Shortly thereafter, Michael Jr. came home angry because of a "talk" he had with his employer about the impropriety of sexual thoughts towards little girls. He was replaced and his employment ended out of that man's home afterwards,, as it was believed Michael's employer saw these pedophilic behaviors and needed to protect his own children from a perpetrator.
A year later, while preparing for Michael Bacolas' 19th birthday party, Michael Roberson heard his oldest son crying in his bedroom. Upon inquiry, Michael Jr.. admitted that his cousin (Elizabeth), a friend he had for a time and son of his former employer (Sam Jr.) and his younger brother (Christopher) had found child pornography in Michael Jr's bedroom. Michael was humiliated as the pictures that were found were of naked prepubescent girls, which they graffitied with words such as chomo, pervert, pedophile, etc.
Michael Robertson recognized the crisis at hand, knew that all the party goers at the birthday party would have been told of the pornography, which would have had deleterious effects for the young man's self esteem and reputation with his peers. Later is was learned that all his sons acquaintances already knew Michael Jr. "liked little girls", which is another reason he had very few friends. The acquaintances the adolescent did associate with was predominantly his little brother's friends and peers.
The father had to act swift and fast, as the birthday party was an hour before party goers were to arrive. Michael Robertson, a retired counselor at this time, as acutely aware that is oldest son was still in the psychosocial stage of Erik Erikson's development, referred to as Identity vs. Confusion. Although there is no known cure for pedophilia in men, the father hoped that Michael Jr.'s personality was not foreclosed as a pedophile, and that his son was merely in a state of identity confusion.
Michael Sr. contacted his personal assistant at the business he owned at the time, who called a 20 year old girl that was known by the father and his staff. That evening, Michael Jr. had relations with an adult woman and all the party goers celebrated the fact that the boy was "normal." Later Michael Robertson was criticized by his son as an example of "bad parenting" for the hook up with an adult female, but in retrospect, any father would have matched their 19 year old son with an adult woman upon learning of a preoccupation with pedophilia.
After the father's intervention at the birthday party, his son began dating adult women and it was believed the pedophilia was a phase the young man was going through.
Unfortunately, this did not cure his son of this disorder or put him on the right psychosexual path, as later in his early adulthood, his wife, Leandra Bacolas, found child pornography on his computer countless times. In the beginning of her discoveries of the pedophilia, the younger son (Christopher) took the blame for the prepubescent imagery on the computer browser and files, but subsequent discoveries by Leandra Bacolas outed her new husband as the pedophile everyone knew Michael Jr. to be.
Michael Jr. was so addicted to child pornography that he was using his wife's laptop to view this inappropriate imagery, another marker of a narcissistic personality.
Michael Bacolas promised his father, wife, and brother that he would begin counseling and get psychiatric treatment to deal with his pedophilia, but that never occurred to his father's knowledge, nor was he put on aversion medications to treat those symptoms. Another failure in parenting was Michael Robertson's absorption in his new family with his second marriage and the demands of his business, so the father did not follow up on treatment for this disorder.
The pedophilia was a constant source of contention in Michael Jr.'s marriage and it was a repeated theme of behavior and he was continuously being caught by his wife with these materials. Subsequently, Leandra Bacolas divorced Michael Jr. and took their two common daughters with her, assumed to protect her young daughters from a known pedophile with narcissistic personality traits.

Each stage of development is marked by conflicts that can help build growth or stifle development, depending upon how they are resolved. If these psychosexual stages are completed successfully, a healthy personality is the result.
If certain issues are not resolved at the appropriate stage, fixations can occur. A fixation is a persistent focus on an earlier psychosexual stage. Until this conflict is resolved, the individual will remain "stuck" in this stage and their personality development arrested.

Castration anxiety is a psychoanalytic concept introduced by Sigmund Freud to describe a boy’s fear of loss of or damage to the genital organ as punishment for incestuous wishes toward the mother and murderous fantasies toward the rival father. The anxiety is validated by the boy’s discovery of the anatomical difference between the sexes.

Christoher Bacolas worried about his safety after fights with his older brother. In his work he states that the term covert is often used to suggest that the covert narcissist is sneaky or that their strive for importance is not as significant as an overt (more extroverted) narcissist. In fact, he reports, the traits of the overt narcissist and the covert narcissist are the same. Both covert and overt narcissists navigate the world with a sense of self-importance and fantasizing about success and grandeur.
The covert narcissist will be much more likely to constantly seek reassurance about their talents, skills, and accomplishments, looking for others to feed that same need for self-importance. The introverted, covert narcissist may have a more gentle approach to explain why something is your fault and they are not to blame. They might even pretend to be a victim of your behavior or engage in emotional abuse to put themselves in a position to receive reassurance and praise.
In early adulthood, Michael and his siblings lived in their father's home. Covert narcissists can take joy in creating confusion for someone they are interacting with. Remembering that they are always focused on staying elevated to maintain their sense of self-importance, it is easy to understand how a covert narcissist would find it difficult to compliment you. Michael Robertson's parenting was over as Michael Jr. became an adult and identified with his mother and her malignant lifestyle and beliefs. One of the last conversations the father had with his son was regarding Michael Jr.'s ideas to write a book about his life. The father tried to explain that for a book to be written about one's life, something phenomenal and amazing needs to have happened or accomplished for people to want to read about another's life.
Michael did not achieve any career, academic, relationship success in his life. Tragedies to people around him, but not to him. The last correspondence his father received was a 20 page "rant" his son sent priority mail, as grandiose and peculiar statements were always challenged by Michael Robertson as invalid when babbled by his son in person ("quote your sources"). Not wanting his narcissistic ideals of superiority challenged, Michael Jr. sent his father a rant in writing. Michael Robertson did not read the ravings of an arrested developed narcissist living in an alternate reality, nor was he motivated to do so. The father gave the document to his younger son, Christopher, to return as unread.
Questionable death of grandson at the hands of narcissists.
In 2007, Michael Bacolas approached is father laughing that his brother and girlfriend, wanted to pay him to assist in terminating a pregnancy.
This was confirmed by other family members and friends of the adolescent children at the time. The couple had approached friends in Phoenix who shared concern and shock they were trying to terminate the pregnancy by ill means.
Michael Robertson learned of a pregnancy with his youngest son and her girlfriend in 2007. He made plans to adopt the child at birth and raise the baby as his own, being the man's grandson. After attempts were made by the adolescents to terminate the unborn grandson of Michael Robertson, he counselled his son and her girlfriend and assured them they would be alright and not bogged down with the responsibility of raising an unwanted child. Michael Robertson wanted that child and loved the baby before it was even born.
On July 28, 2007, Michael Robertson's son and girlfriend entered his bedroom in the evening and disclosed there was "something wrong" and both adolescents had the look of guilt upon their demeanor.
Michael Robertson knew what happened, but repressed the narcissistic abuse for the mental health of the adolescent children. They had done something to rupture the embryotic sack and the girl had broke her water. His grandson was 23 weeks in gestation when this event happened.
The girl's mother came to his home in Surprise, Arizona, and took her daughter to Phoenix Baptist Hospital. Being an immigrant family from Russia, they were not informed or had knowledge that Phoenix Baptist did not have a prenatal neo natal unit for premature child birth.
Michael Robertson was frantically trying to get the girl transferred to Saint Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, which has one of the top neo natal units in the country. Phoenix Baptist would not authorize the transfer as there would have been a high risk that the girl would go into delivery during the transfer. Staff at Saint Joseph's directed the father, off the record, to put the girl in a car and drive her to their neo natal unit. The girl's mother objected.
